Sydney Australia: Within jurisdictions of hundreds or thousands of schools, individual school needs vary, so a single monolithic system might not be a good fit for all. World Mosaic’s government research and strategy arm, Gov, recently concluded a far-reaching international study of alternative market-based models for administration and learning platforms in the emerging world of microservices.

With single-vendor platform projects, time is also an issue. By the time a large three to five-year single platform rollout concludes, it becomes obsolete. Sustainability is also an issue. Big school system CIOs’ often find single-vendor platforms become so customised, they become unmanageable and high-risk.

In the era of cloud services and improved Web integration, our team looked into how some jurisdictions are moving to a more open education platform marketplace models that offer schools choice, at the same time locking in central data integration, reporting and security requirements. We interviewed central stakeholders in some of the world’s largest school cloud services marketplace rollouts in ANZ, Europe and North America.
